Travels & Trails?

Explore

We all have places where we get outside and experience natural areas near us. This site helps us find new ones and helps others experience these places too.

Plan

We can plan longer expeditions too - there are many places only accessible by walking further, canoeing further, or even flying.

Dream

There are trails to be hiked, rivers to be paddled, and areas to be explored. If you join you can keep track of places you've been, share them with others, and record your experiences.

I built this site for people who enjoy the outdoors as much as I do. Dreaming about adventures is the first step in experiencing them.

How to Use It

Browsing Places

The "Places" page will show you a map and a list of places. As you zoom in or move the map, the list of places will change. The places in the list are only the ones shown in the map, so the more you zoom in, the fewer will be in the list.

Depending on the map, there may still be a lot of places in the list. You can arrange them, or narrow them down further, by using the top row of the list. If you click on a heading order will change. If you choose a particular "Activity", only places tagged with that activity will show up.

If you are logged in, you can rate places by clicking on the rating bar, add photos by dropping them on the plus, or add a new place by clicking in the top bar on the "Places" page.

Joining

To join, go to the join page, enter your email and a password, click "Join", and a few minutes later you will receive and email at the address you provided. Click on the link in this email to confirm your account, and then you can "Log In" with your email address and password. If you ever want to change your password, you can do this on your "Profile" page when signed in.

Your email address is never visible to anyone else.

Adding Places

To add a place, you must be logged in. Once you are logged in, click on "Add Place" at the top or the "+" in the menu bar on the left. You will be taken to a blank template for this new place. Click on any of the sections to edit them. All the text areas you can edit will have a light blue background.

In the "Activities" section, you can add as many as apply to this place. It might be a good roadside stop as well as a hike, but if it's not worth stopping unless you hike, leave out the roadside stop.

In the "Summary" just try to sum up the place in a few words. This will appear on the "Places" page in the search results.

In "Quick Info", you can add as many as you have information for. Some won't apply depending on the activity. Add any that make sense (to add more click on the "+" button). If you make a mistake you can always click on the "-" button next to the heading. That will remove the section.

To add photos, drag photos (one or a few at a time) onto the + at the top of the center column. Ideally the files will be 1920x1080 pixels. You can always delete any photo you uploaded by clicking on the "X" overlayed on your own picture thumbnails.

On the map, zoom in so the place fills the map, and click "Save Map Bounds". Add pins to the map such as trailhead, parking area, or other points of interest by clicking "Add Points" and then clicking anywhere on the map. If you make a mistake, you can click on a point you've already added and either edit it or delete it. You can also choose what picture should be on the pin. The topographic map section (in Canada) will cover the area of all the pins you add - it is good to add pins at the beginning and furthest point of an adventure. To do this, click "Edit Points" and then click on the map where you want to add a point.

Deleting Places

Right now you can't delete places. Once they're added, they're there to stay. If I notice a place for which there is no information and it stays blank for a few days, I will delete it. If you really, really want a place you've added to disappear, you can delete all the information from it, and I will delete it after a bit.
