70 Mile Butte

Grasslands National Park is a beautiful park in southern Saskatchewan. It covers a huge area, mostly around the Frenchman River. 70 Mile Butte is one of the more hilly areas of the park. The buttes are spectacular from below, but once you climb up to the top, they give an incredible view of the park. It seems like you can see forever.

Be careful when hiking, as there are rattlesnakes in the area and prickly pear cactuses.

To get here go south from Val Marie. There will be a signed gravel road going east. It is a short drive down the gravel road to a parking area with an outhouse and one picnic table. These were both new, so it seems like they are actively working on facilities.

It seems like the trail is supposed to go to a predefined butte, but there seem to be a few trails that fade in and out. The landscape here looks like it erodes pretty quickly. I did find two sign posts to mark the trail, but lost it after a bit.

In Val Marie there is a park office that would have information including trail maps that should be pretty easy to follow.
