Red Rock Coulee is a really interesting place. You can't really tell when you come up to it. It looks like the thousands of miles of beautiful prairie you've already seen. And then you come to the top of the little hill where the parking area is and you see something strange. The whole area is dotted with big oval reddish orange boulders. These are each massive stones, many of them more than 6 feet high, some of them still embedded in the soil, and some resting on top.
This is not a huge area. The stones are confined to a couple square kilometers for some reason, so you won't be hiking too far. But you can spend a good half-day here, exploring around the coulee and climbing up on rocks.
To get here, go south from Medicine Hat on Highway 3, turn left before Seven Persons to head south again on highway 887. When you come to a 90 degree curve in the highway, instead of following the curve, go straight south on the gravel road. in about a kilometer or so you get to the parking area.
