Yellowknife River

I would like to paddle the entire river someday and make this description more exciting. When I was living in Yellowknife, I did the Sunday afternoon version from the Prosperous Lake boatlaunch accessible from the Ingraham Trail close to Yellowknife. Once you paddle through the corridor that leads to the big lake, the water can be a bit choppy. Paddle past Cassidy point with all its cottages and head Northwest. Class II Tartan Rapids will greet you shortly with a mild roar and at medium water levels, you might want to run them. There is also an easy, visible portage trail since caution is not necessarily always bad, especially in high (or low) water. After the rapids, there's a lot of flat, shallow, meandering river. The bridge with its parking lot is a convenient point at which to disembark.
