Halfmoon Lake Natural Area is a diverse area with many different kinds of forests. There are trails all throughout, some of which are very well marked and some of which are quite hard to follow. A GPS or map and compass are very handy if you want to go off the main trail.
Just a note on the GPS to the right - that's my path - trails go much further to the west than I went. I believe I also exited the natural area to the north, as it looked like people had cabins by the lake, although the trail did lead all the way there.
The trail through the pines above the lake (the main trail, and the southern most trail on the GPS track) is very sandy and a little hard to walk on. The trail down by the lake can get very soggy, so if you go down there be prepared to get wet.
