My first time hiking the trail to the reconstructed cabin on Ajawaan Lake began in late afternoon. By the time we arrived at the cabin after 20 km of fast hiking and running, it was around 8 pm. Catching our breath in the still, silent evening, we were startled by a loon which treated us to its eerie, quavering call and promptly dived out of sight. On the way back in the darkness, we felt our way along the trail with a faint glow to the west over Kingsmere Lake, stopping to rest our painful ankles and feet on occasion. One of my favourite hiking memories is of lying on the beach with lactic leg muscles, listening to a wild cacophony of loon laughter. Wildlife abounds - including foxes, bald eagles, squirrels and grouse - and the surroundings can be felt spiritually as much as seen. There are several fine campsites, and the trail can be enjoyed in more leisurely style with one or two overnights.
