Uapishka (Monts Groulx)
Les Monts Groulx (also known as Uapishka or "White Mountains" in the Montagnais Innu dialect), are accessible from route 389 north of Baie Comeau. The hiking trail connects with the highway at two points: one at km 335 from Baie Comeau and the other at km 365. The highest mountains in the region are Mont Veyrier (1104 m) and Mont Jauffret (1065 m).
Terrain on the Uapishka plateau ranges from rocky tundra to wet, squishy muskeg. It is a true wilderness area and it's almost impossible not to go off-trail and explore. Steep valleys pop into existence out of nowhere; knee-high thickets of dwarf birch alternate with deep moss, snowbanks, and cataracts of meltwater hurtling into the many lakes and ponds. Hiking in late June, we gave up trying to keep our feet dry - an impossibility even on the trail. While the weather can be harsh even in summer on the exposed plateau (bring lots of insulation and raingear) the region has a secluded charm that is hard to find in the more southern parts of the province.
