Sikanni Chief Falls
We were on our way up to the Dempster Highway in the Yukon. This is an extremely long drive and you need breaks along the way. This hike is a great break. It only took us an hour or so total, and is well worth it. You do need a vehicle with decent clearance to get here - there were a couple major washouts and potholes on the dirt road leading here, although most of the road was pretty good. Once you get to the parking lot, the obvious trail descends through the poplars. It is a fairly short trail, although the closer you get to the falls, the less clear it gets and the more it splits. There are also some pretty steep sections. You can mostly follow the roar of the falls at this point. People have obviously explored all over the bank. Exploring is great, but there are a lot of cliffs and steep slopes around here, so be extremely careful. I'm not sure if it is technically allowed, but some people have camped down here as well. This is a pretty popular trail, so I'm not sure if I would want to camp close to it.
The falls are really impressive. The viewpoint is not very close to the falls and getting down to the bank below would be difficult, but the views are great both of the falls and looking downstream. You could spend a day exploring the area or you could go see the falls and be done pretty quick.
To get here, take the mile 171 road going west from the highway - it is not marked. Drive 17km down this road to the parking area.
