Roseau

Roseau was hot and much drier than the east coast. It has a little bit of a city smell, but is pleasant to walk around in. Driving would be a different matter, because the roads are all super narrow. This is where all the cruise ships park, so try not to go on a cruise ship day or there will be tourists everywhere. Roseau also has the only ATMs (or bank machines - I'm not sure how universal that term is) on the whole island. So when you arrive on your plane, remember to already have EC currency so you can pay your cab (learned that by experience). Although if you forget to take out money, they're really nice about driving you to a bank in Roseau (about an hour drive) and letting you take out cash to pay them.

The Roseau Botanic Garden is east of downtown Roseau, and a nice place to get away from the bustle of the downtown. On the north side of the Gardens, you can take Jack's Walk up Morne Bruce for a nice view of Roseau.

We were staying at 3 Rivers Eco Lodge on the east side of the island, so when we wanted to go to Roseau, we hitchhiked. Now this apparently is the most common mode of transportation on the island. We walked down the road towards Roseau, a truck came by, pulled over, and they asked where we were going. We said, "Roseau", and they said, "Get in". So we hopped in the back of the pickup, and rode for a while. There were numerous other stops to pick up people on the side of the road, so the truck filled up pretty quick. We met Dasha and Wilson here. They were going to work in Roseau, and when they heard we were going to Roseau to look around, they offered to show us around. So we walked around Roseau with them for a bit, went to a fresh juice stand and had a drink with them, and then they went off to work. Time seems to be much more flexible there.
