Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is a beautiful area, but very busy, especially during the major tourist season. You can rent canoes here, or go on a tour boat ride to Spirit Island. In winter it is quiet and mostly closed, but if the road is open this is a great place to go. The trail along the east side of the lake is fairly wide and flat - easy even in the snow. The Bald Hills hike starts on the west side of the lake, and also is hikeable in winter.
To canoe to the backcountry camps, you have to make reservations well ahead of time (think months). There are not a lot of camp sites, and this is a popular place.
The lake is long and deep, so if the wind is right the waves can get quite large.
